What makes a home?

For me, home is a safe shelter, a haven. On the east coast of Africa in Tanzania, there is a city called Dar es Salaam which, if you translate its Arabic name, means “Safe Haven”, a place where you can take shelter from the wind. It’s the same with Lisbon – its prehistoric name refers to a safe bay and this is what home is for me. I have been on the road for almost 40 years and I am often in places that have experienced rather painful historical or natural events. When you’re in such extreme conditions, you sometimes wonder “What am I doing here exactly? I want to go home”. I want to go to this proverbial home where I can find shelter from the threats of the modern world.
